Where's all that cheap gas from Iraq?

Remember when one of the arguments in favour of invading Iraq was that gas prices would drop below the 2003 level? This was one of the populist points made repeatedly. If you opposed the invasion, then you wanted gas prices to remain at $2 per gallon, because "we would get the oil" and that meant really cheap gas somehow (though refinery capacity has been the chief bottleneck for gasoline price drops for decades now).

Remarkably, this bogus claim was also used in the First Gulf War.

And, even now, it's is being put forward as a reason for invading Iran, because this time "we" will get the oil -- or rather, the multinational oil companies will get the oil, and we all 'know' that they will act in our best interests.

Not so remarkably, the Gulf States failed to see our invasion of Iraq as a shining success that made them safer and more secure, and thus declined to increase production at the Decider's request.
